Abstract
This Professional Guide in the Resources for Training Trainers series outlines how the Mastery Rubric for Bioinformatics (MR-Bi) can be used as a practical tool both to inform course design, and to support professional development. The specific focus here is on understanding how the MR-BI’s key elements may be used to identify an individual’s training needs, and to shape course design around target skills and developmental stages.
Specifically, this Guide illustrates how the MR-Bi can help to pinpoint training requirements, and to target courses to specific learning outcomes at appropriate levels of cognitive development. On reading the Guide, and engaging with the exercises, you will be able to:
- list the principal components of the MR-Bi;
- describe how the MR-Bi‘s developmental stages relate to Bloom’s-levels of cognitive complexity;
- pinpoint your own/your mentees’ stage(s) of development within the MR-Bi, and hence your/their potential training needs;
- identify the developmental stages appropriate for a training course;
- identify the knowledge, skills and abilities that are the target of that course;
- use the MR-Bi in conjunction with Bloom’s verbs to articulate learning outcomes for that course; and
- explain how the MR-Bi could be used to adapt your training to the needs of individual learners participating in a course.
